Open de France 300m 2016    (For Results Click Here)

Two teams set off on Friday 29th April, one representing GBR (Simon Aldhouse, Harry Creevy and Martin Scrivens) and one representing GB300m (Richard Fowkes, Tim Hammond and Matt Guille). After a very straightforward journey to the beautifully run and sheltered range at Clermont, Friday afternoon was given to free practice; Richard had a foresight issue and during a serious thunderstorm a tent fell on Harry, happily doing no damage. All was otherwise well and the teams were ready for the first match on Saturday. The first detail was very cold with Martin and Tim braving the conditions, Martin started well but struggled later on whilst Tim had some shots go out through not being able to feel the trigger. The second detail was a little warmer and Richard had a very steady shoot for a 593 but in the middle of Simon’s shoot his group moved wildly down and then up. He tested for loose sights but nothing appeared wrong and it seemed unexplained until the backer was returned – it had been due to a target malfunction but of such an unusual type that even a shooter of Simon’s experience did not think to challenge it. The final detail saw the islanders on the range, both started very strongly before Matt had a dreadful 15 shot patch in mid-shoot; Harry also shot less well in the second part – in this detail the cold was less of a challenge than the dark. So Saturday ends as I write – not our best day with GB300m taking the bronze in the team event behind France 1 and 2 and GBR 4th. The challenge is to improve significantly tomorrow.

Sunday was a beautifully sunny day – and this can make shooting on the right hand side of the Clermont range first thing quite challenging, although work is underway to make the shadows less dappled across the targets. Both Tim and Martin on the right side of the range found the going hard. Simon and Richard were again on detail 2, Simon had a solid shoot with a 595 but Richard could not get going. On detail 3, earlier than on Saturday Harry had an OK 592 but Matt’s rifle failed to load after shot 33, necessitating a clean/cool down and a very rapid second half of the match – clearly this needs sorting out. So Simon won the individual bronze on Sunday and GBR got silver in the team. Overall a weekend of well organized and enjoyable shooting but on which we felt we should have done better.     (MG)

European Double Silver For Hannah Pugsley - August 2015

The 2015 European Shooting Championships were held in Maribor, in Slovenia. The 300m events took place on a range which had a somewhat ‘temporary’ feel: unlike the superb purpose-built ranges which we are used to on ‘mainland Europe’, the Maribor 300m range felt more like the NSRA Meeting at Bisley – without the benefit of the tarmac firing point … the chipboard firing point had a tent-like cover overhead, but nothing behind or to the side of the shooters; the ‘facilities’ were portaloos, and there were army tents for changing rooms which doubled as cleaning areas. However, the targets were electronic, and the range was run most professionally with ISSF officials out in force.

The week before the team departed for Maribor, Hannah had attempted some training – at 300 yards at Bisley, as we had had no access to the 300m range since mid June. She had planned to train standing and kneeling, but the wind was strong enough to make it difficult to hold position in kneeling, let alone standing, and the grass firing point was hardly level. Reasoning that training in these conditions would in no way prepare her for Maribor, Hannah elected to restrict her training to prone ….. how wrong could she have been!

In Maribor, conditions for the Women’s Prone match were not ideal: heavy rain made for poor visibility, and wet flags made wind reading challenging. These conditions were reflected in the scores: only 9 of the 25 shooters broke 590. Hannah shot superbly, losing only 3 points in the first 50 shots which put her at the head of the field. 3 more escaped the 10 in her last string – giving her a score of 594 with 30 centre ‘x’s … an excellent score in the conditions and an International personal best. Meanwhile, Lisa Mueller powered through with a 99 in her last string to finish on 594 – with 32 ‘x’s. Hannah’s Silver medal was GBR’s first individual medal of the Championships.

Two days later it was time for the Women’s 3x20. This is a relatively new discipline for Hannah – 2015 is only her second season competing in this event. With her aim being to shoot a PB, Hannah got off to a storming start: 100 in her first kneeling series, followed by a 96. The prone element went perfectly according to plan: 200 ex 200. The standing element was more challenging and Hannah was disappointed with her last string. Nevertheless, she had achieved her goal of a PB, set a new British Record, and won another Silver Medal – losing out (again!) to Lisa Mueller.

At the end of the Championships, GBR had two team medals: the Women’s Team Bronze in Skeet, and the men Team Gold in Double Trap, but Hannah was the only GBR shooter with individual medals to bring home.

GB Gold in Weimar !! - June 2009

Shooting in the Ladies  60 Shot  European  cup event in Weimar, Britain's   Mary  Pearse  was the unexpected winner of the prone Gold  with an impressive  598, one point ahead of Italian shooter Barbara  Alviti .

Her result was a competition, and personal  best , it also equalled the current European record. She now shares the same ladies British record score with her daughter.

Mary took advantage of the near perfect conditions on 17.00 pm relay to  produce a technically well shot score with her 6mm BR Grunig rifle using ammunition loaded by her husband Andy. This win confirms a place in the EC Cup circuit final in  Pilzen  (CZ) during September, and a place in the European Championship team to Croatia  in mid July.

600 for Tony Lincoln - March  2009

A page of history was turned in British 300m shooting at the weekend. Bedfordshire’s Tony Lincoln raised the UK 60 Shot prone record to the perfect 600.

Tony shooting in the NRA ”A” team in Clermont (France), and having shot an equal British, and local range record of 599 on the Saturday went on to the perfect performance the following morning.

The result is even more amazing in that having had a problem getting his rifle and ammo combination to work in training, he took up the offer of a fellow team member to borrow his rifle for the competition.

The British mens prone record (shot by the late Malcolm Cooper) has stood since the 1986 World Championships in Sweden, and although been equalled in training has never been beaten in competition.

Tony helped the NRA “A" team to the closest win in the event history having tied on X bulls first before a last string count back.

Following his trophy and medal haul he was presented at the farewell lunch with a magnum of Champagne by the match director.

This bodes well for Tony in this years European events

Success for the NRA Team in France - March 2004

The first weekend away for this year dawned clear and bright for the NRA 300 meter team visiting Clermont in France, resulting in a clutch of trophies for the team as well as individuals, giving an excellent start to the new season for its GB shooters.

This is normally the very first time we get to shoot 300m in the New Year.  However last weekend some of us were lucky enough to be around during the commissioning of the new electronic targets at Bisley, and we had at least had the opportunity to clear the cobwebs out of the barrels!

Europa Cup Final - Liestal, Switzerland - September 2002
